Ear Aesthetics – Otoplasty

WHAT ARE THE GOALS OF AESTHETIC SURGERIES OF EAR?

Prominent ear deformity is congenital and can be only on one side or on both sides. It is caused due to the ears’ excessive head-to-ear angle, absence of folds that give shape to the ear and absence of ear pits.

Corrective surgery for prominent ears can be performed after 6 years old when the ears complete their development.

There are many surgical techniques for prominent ears. Deformity can be fixed by these techniques.

SURGERY DETAILS

HOW ARE THE PERIOPERATIVE AND POSTOPERATIVE PERIODS OF EAR AESTHETIC SURGERY?

It can be performed under general anesthesia, sedation anesthesia or local anesthesia. Otoplasty usually takes 1.5 hours for both ears. Postoperative elastic bandage is applied on the ears for 3 days. After the bandage is removed, tennis headband should be used. Tennis headband is also worn at nights and thus, a total of 4-week period is completed. Bruise and swelling may occur on the ears after operation. Bruise and edema heal within 10 days. The ears should be protected from trauma in the first 3 months.

Since the surgical incision is planned on the fold of the ear-head junction, the scar is completely hidden. Mostly scars become hardly visible over time and they are hidden scars. Nonetheless, wound healing varies from person to person. In very rare cases, excessive wound healing (keloid, hypertrophic scar) may occur.

Sagging and tear may occur on ear lobe due to heavy earrings, traumas and related to age. Generally, these deformities can be corrected by special techniques under local anesthesia and well rounded ear can be regained with filler materials. Excessively prominent ear lobes can be corrected during the surgery of ear, including it in the plan.

It takes 1-3 months for face to get the final appearance. In the long term results, a little sagging may form again due to genetic structure and effects of life style but not completely.  Mostly the scars become hardly visible within a few years. Nonetheless, wound healing varies from person to person. In very rare cases, excessive wound healing (keloid, hypertrophic scar) may occur.
